The field of Environmental, Social and Governance or ESG (formerly known as Corporate and Social Responsibility or CSR) has exploded over the past few years to become today's investing and governance buzzword. Compliance, reporting and investment professionals are all hoping to capitalize on the growth within the industry. I'd like to take a moment to point out that the mining industry is where ESG began. Mining companies, for better and worse, have been working towards positive economic and social development in the communities where they operate for decades...with very limited positive accolades and discussion on the international stage. Lessons can be learned from the past successes and mistakes of the mining industry. I think it's high time the industry and its professionals start to speak up and loudly profess our capacity and ability to drive significant and positive impact through stakeholder engagement, investment and support.
